Pedestrian dies after being struck by vehicle Sunday

A woman is dead after being hit by a car Sunday night in St. James.

Winnipeg police say they went to the scene of a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at Portage Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard around 10:45 p.m.

Winnipeg Police Service spokesperson Const. Jason Michalyshen said the driver, a woman, and a male passenger were driving eastbound on Portage Avenue when she hit the pedestrian, who was crossing the street.

“The vehicle has a destination in mind, the pedestrian has a destination in mind, and the specifics of that is something we’re still sorting out,” he said.

The travelling speed of the driver is still unknown, Michalyshen said.

Paramedics took the victim to hospital in critical condition but she died of her injuries, police said in a news release Monday morning.

The driver remained on scene and spoke with investigating officers. Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the incident, Michalyshen said.

Police continue to investigate. Anyone with information or video footage is asked to contact Traffic Division investigators at 204-986-7085, Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or online at winnipegcrimestoppers.org.
