Police release images of persons of interest in year-old Elmwood slaying

The family of a father who was slain a year ago in Elmwood is hopeful images of people of interest released Tuesday will bring them answers.

Joseph Robert Campbell, 24, was assaulted on the 300 block of Keenleyside Street at about 11:20 p.m. on Oct. 14, 2023 and pronounced dead in hospital.

A year later, two blurry security images of three people published by the Winnipeg Police Service Tuesday have provided his father, Richard Campbell, and the rest of his family, with a rare development in the search to find his son’s killer.

“I miss him a lot, all the small things. I feel like something was stolen from me,” he said Tuesday. “Somebody stole him from me, and from all of us.”

Campbell had left the home of a friend in East Elmwood that night and was found on the sidewalk near a lane between Kent Road and Pike Crescent. His mother, Rosemarie Campbell, said the details of that night remain a mystery.

“What we know is (he and his girlfriend) got into an argument and he left,” she said. “For whatever reason, he didn’t end up making it home from there.”

Last year, the WPS said homicide detectives had taken over the investigation and asked for help identifying people involved, but did not provide any descriptions. It was Winnipeg’s 28th homicide of 2023.

Campbell, a roofer, was one of eight siblings, a father to three children and stepfather to another.

Campbell’s loved ones held a Thanksgiving gathering in his honour Monday and put out a plate for him at the intersection where he died.

The entire family believes there were witnesses to the killing and encourage anyone with any information to speak up.

“I feel frustrated that we don’t know exactly what happened to him yet,” said Irene Bussidor, Campbell’s sister.

“I’m sure there (were) people who saw something and aren’t saying anything.”

The WPS asked anyone with information about the killing or the persons of interest to contact the homicide unit at 204-986-6508, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or online.
