Prime minister in Winnipeg

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in Winnipeg today, weeks before a federal byelection will be held in the city.

The prime minister made a surprise appearance at Folklorama Monday night, attending the Filipino pavilion at R.B. Russell Vocational School.

A byelection in the city’s Elmwood-Transcona riding will be held Sept. 16 to replace New Democrat Daniel Blaikie, who announced earlier this year he was resigning the seat.

Ian MacIntyre, a retired teacher and union leader, will run for the federal Liberal Party in Elmwood–Transcona.

The Conservative candidate in the byelection is Colin Reynolds and the NDP candidate is Leila Dance.
