Remembrance Day ceremonies and what’s open/closed this weekend

Poppy-clad Winnipeggers and other Manitobans will gather Monday to honour those who gave their lives in service to Canada and pay tribute to those still serving at Remembrance Day ceremonies throughout the city and province.

REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICES

The largest Remembrance Day ceremony in the city will be held at the RBC Convention Centre downtown. Doors open for the ceremony at 9:30 a.m. It begins at 10:40 a.m. and is expected to run to 12:30 p.m.

• HMCS Chippawa will host a ceremony at 1 Navy Way, with doors opening at 10 a.m. and the service beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The Minto Armoury’s memorial will run from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., with doors opening at 9 a.m.

The Royal Winnipeg Rifles service will run from 10:30 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. in Vimy Ridge Park.

The annual Valour Road ceremony, at the corner of Valour and Sargent Avenue, will begin after 10:30 a.m.

Many Royal Canadian Legions will hold events, including St. James Legion No. 4, Transcona Legion No. 7 and Henderson Legion No. 215 in Winnipeg, as well as events in a number of towns and cities outside Winnipeg.

• Charleswood Legion No. 100 will hold a ceremony at Oak Park High School, which begins at 10 a.m.

• ANAVETS Unit 283 Assiniboia will hold a service and after-service activities at its location at 3584 Portage Ave., beginning at 10:40 a.m. Doors open at 9:30 a.m.

The Royal Canadian Air Force will mark Remembrance Day with flypasts over six ceremonies in Winnipeg. An RCAF CT-142 Dash-8 aircraft from 17 Wing will conduct flypasts Monday over: Royal Canadian Legion No. 4 (St. James) and Bruce Park, Vimy Ridge Park, HMCS Chippawa, Royal Canadian Legion No. 7 (Transcona), Royal Canadian Legion No. 215 (Henderson) and Oak Park High School.


Many government services will be open different hours or closed on Remembrance Day. Here’s a selection:

GOVERNMENT SERVICES

Civic, provincial and federal offices are closed on Remembrance Day.

There is no mail delivery or collection on Monday. Canada Post offices are closed, but post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business.

RECYCLING AND TRASH

Recycling and garbage will not be collected Monday.

The 4R Winnipeg depot at the Brady landfill, as well as the depots on Pacific Street and Panet Road, will be closed.

WINNIPEG TRANSIT

Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Remembrance Day. Veterans and currently serving armed forces members, along with one companion, will get free service.

LIBRARIES

All Winnipeg Public Library branches will be closed on Monday.

LEISURE ACTIVITIES

Most city pools and leisure centres will be closed, but the Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex will open from 2 to 6 p.m. and the Margaret Grant and Pan Am pools will open from 1 to 5 p.m.

CEMETERIES

All city cemetery grounds at Brookside, Transcona and St. Vital will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The administration office of Brookside will be closed.

SHOPPING

CF Polo Park, Garden City Shopping Centre, Outlet Collection Winnipeg and St. Vital Centre will be open from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Kildonan Place will be open 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Grant Park Shopping Centre will be open 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Forks Market building will be open regular hours — 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. — on Remembrance Day, though some businesses inside may choose to remain closed.

Manitoba Liquor Mart stores will open at 1 p.m. and will close at different hours through the evening.

Beer vendors and private wine stores set their own hours for Remembrance Day, so call ahead.

Most grocery stores will be open, but possibly with different hours.

ENTERTAINMENT

The Assiniboine Park Zoo will open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Leaf will be open from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights will be closed, but is offering free admission to veterans and active service personnel until Sunday. The Manitoba Children’s Museum will be open 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Manitoba Museum will be closed. The Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada and the Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
