Residents of Transcona home that exploded are safe: police

The occupants of the Transcona house destroyed in an explosion Wednesday morning have been found and are safe, city police said Thursday.

Spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen told reporters near the scene that police spoke with the two adults who live in the Camrose Bay home Wednesday. They are a man and a woman, possibly a father and daughter, Michalyshen said.

“They weren’t home at the time,” he said.

Police on Thursday survey the rubble where a house exploded on Camrose Bay in Transcona on Wednesday.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation by the Winnipeg Police Service’s major crimes unit, the bomb unit and the forensic identification section.

“Houses don’t just explode. There’s a reason for it, and what that reason is has yet to be determined,” Michalyshen said, adding that might take months.

“It’s going to take some time.”

The explosion at 35 Camrose Bay happened at 11:19 a.m. Wednesday. Only the foundation of the house remained standing afterward. Several other homes were damaged.

The WPS is asking anyone with information or video that might help investigators to call investigators at 204-986-6219 or to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or winnipegcrimestoppers.org.

The WPS said private drones were being operated at the scene on Wednesday. They reminded the public that private drone use is prohibited over emergency operations and that operators could face serious penalties.
