A second teenager has been charged in the Selkirk Avenue machete assault on a 15-year-old who suffered two broken arms and skull fractures, among other serious injuries, earlier this month.

The Winnipeg Police Service has released new suspect details and information about the leadup to the violent Aug. 7 altercation.

Two boys — 14 and 15 years old — are accused of assaulting another boy, who they did not previously know, with machetes in the 300 block of Selkirk Avenue that evening.

Both suspects have been tied to several other crimes, including an Aug. 4 machete assault on an 80-year-old man in the 400 block of Pritchard Avenue, police said.

A news release states the senior victim suffered serious upper-body injuries.

“The Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation and established that three youth suspects, including a 12-year-old female and two males aged 14 and 15, were intoxicated and armed with machetes and an axe,” police said.

WPS determined the trio confronted several other people before randomly attacking the elderly man, who was smoking outside, and running away.
