Severe thunderstorm over city

The severe thunderstorm over Winnipeg could produce “very strong wind gusts” and hail as large as a nickel, along with heavy rain.

Environment and Climate Change Canada, which put out a thunderstorm warning for the city just before 3:30 p.m. Thursday, said its meteorologists are tracking the storm.

It was about six kilometres west of St. Norbert and was moving south slowly, the weather agency said at about 3:18 p.m.

The storm could cause winds up to 90 km/h, Environment Canada said. Such winds can toss loose objects, damage building, break tree branches and overturn vehicles.

The national weather agency warned the heavy downpours could cause flash flooding and water pooling on roads, while large hail could damage property and injure people.

Manitoba Hydro does not appear to have reported any significant power outages in Winnipeg.
