Stretch of Portage Avenue remains closed after fatal crash

One person is dead after a collision that has shut down a section of Portage Avenue in Westwood.

The crash happened in the area of Portage and Bedson Street shortly after 7:30 a.m.

The Winnipeg Police Service and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service have yet to officially confirm the death or how many people were hurt, but a sheet placed over a body was seen. Staff members from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner were at the scene.

Several media outlets reported that one person was killed and three were injured in the incident.

A WPS spokesman said shortly before 11 a.m. that Portage was expected to remain closed in both directions in the area of the crash for the “foreseeable future.”

A Winnipeg Transit shelter outside the YMCA at the southwest corner of Portage and Bedson was damaged in the crash.

A pickup truck with front-end damage remained near pumps at the Canadian Tire gas bar on the east side of Bedson.

A hydro pole was knocked over and other equipment damaged, and Manitoba Hydro crews were at the scene. Power was cut off to about 1,350 customers so emergency crews could safely access the area. Hydro posted on social media at 11:18 a.m. that the power had back on.

A Transit bus was also at the scene.
