Winnipeg airport warns travellers to check flights amid global tech outage

The Winnipeg Airport Authority has warned passengers to double-check the status of their flights this morning, amid a global technology issue that’s grounded planes and knocked other important systems offline.

Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said that the issue believed to be behind the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack — and that a fix was on the way. The company said the problem occurred when it deployed a faulty update to computers running Microsoft Windows. It has affected airlines, banks, hospitals and media outlets.

In Winnipeg, the airport authority said in a social media post that the outage is affecting multiple airlines and might cause delays or cancellations. The authority also advised travellers not to come to the airport if their flight had been cancelled.

Elsewhere, all Dynacares in the province are closed. The company’s website notes the global IT issues have impacted its systems and they “are working to reopen as soon as possible.” All locations in Ontario are also closed.

The Credit Union Central of Manitoba, as well as Assiniboine Credit Union, reported no issues to the Free Press.

There has been no impact on the Manitoba government, a spokesman said. A spokeswoman from the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority said it has not been affected.

Tickets are currently not available online or in person for Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival performances, the organization’s website says. “Tickets will continue to be available for in-person sales at each venue starting 30 minutes prior to the start of the first performance of the day. After that, tickets go on sales 15 minutes after the start of the previous performance in that venue.”
